Universal Film Group and Blumhouse Atomic Monster have secured Curry Barker's next film project, marking his third collaboration with the studios following the success of his breakout film, Obsession.

Major Deal for Barker's New Project

Barker has signed a lucrative eight-figure deal to write, produce, and direct his next film with Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. This new project solidifies his continued relationship with Universal, which previously distributed his film Obsession through Focus Features.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster, having been involved with Obsession and Barker's upcoming film Anything But Ghosts, is set to play a significant production role once again. Other producers include Roy Lee and Steven Schneider’s Spooky Pictures, alongside Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath’s Divide/Conquer, known for films like The Black Phone and Heart Eyes.

Details Under Wraps

While details of the new project remain confidential, it is described as an original horror idea from Barker. The project was purchased following a pitch made to Universal executives. NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley praised Barker, stating, “Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess.”

The new film will be distributed worldwide by Universal Film Group.

Obsession's Remarkable Success

Since its release on May 15, Obsession has become a pop culture phenomenon and continues to perform strongly at the box office. It is on track to surpass $300 million worldwide, making it Focus Features’ highest-grossing release. The film, made on a budget of just $750,000, has sparked discussions on gender relations and the movie business, and is garnering Oscar buzz.

Barker expressed his enthusiasm for the new project, saying, “This film is something I’ve been excited to make for a while, and I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it.”

Collaboration and Future Prospects

Blumhouse Atomic Monster partners James Wan and Jason Blum shared their excitement, stating, “With Obsession, Curry did what only a handful of filmmakers manage in a generation: he made something wholly original that connected with a massive audience.”

Barker is represented by UTA, Underground, and Yorn Levine.
