Airbnb is branching out by integrating hotels into its platform while enhancing AI capabilities to streamline host onboarding and customer support. The move aims to diversify offerings and boost revenue.
Hotel Listings and Market Expansion
After months of testing, Airbnb officially adds a hotel search filter to its app. Initially, it partners with boutique hotels in 20 cities, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore. Users can apply a filter to display only hotel options, with a price match guarantee offering refunds in app credits for lower rates found elsewhere.
“There are a few examples of the types of trips for which a hotel is probably better suited, such as last-minute bookings, one-night stays, and business trips,” said Jud Coplan, Airbnb VP of marketing.
By including hotels, Airbnb can offer stays in cities like New York City and Singapore, where short-term rentals face restrictions. This strategic expansion opens up some of the world's most lucrative travel markets to Airbnb.
New Services and App Redesign
Beyond accommodations, Airbnb encourages users to book experiences and services. Recently launched features include grocery delivery, airport pickup, and soon-to-launch luggage storage at over 15,000 locations. This summer, car rental services will also roll out.
The app redesign integrates these components, allowing users to navigate stays, experiences, and services seamlessly. While no loyalty program is announced, Airbnb credits will be offered for first-time car rentals and up to 15% on hotel bookings, potentially paving the way for future loyalty incentives.
AI Integration in Operations
Airbnb's AI applications focus on improving service efficiency. Hosts can now enter an address and let AI autofill listing details. On the guest side, AI-powered category tags help users filter reviews by location, amenities, and family-friendliness.
An AI comparison tool summarizes wishlist properties, aiding decision-making. The AI-driven support bot, handling 40% of queries in the U.S., will expand globally, supporting 11 languages and offering interactive features for trip adjustments.
Later this year, Airbnb plans to introduce a voice-based AI assistant, developed in collaboration with unnamed partners, for enhanced customer interaction.
