Steve Coogan's latest project, Legends, debuts on Netflix, reimagining a lesser-known chapter in UK history through a six-part thriller. The series follows 1990s customs officers infiltrating a significant drug network, with Coogan portraying Dom, a police chief guiding undercover recruits. 'Legends' is written by Neil Forsyth, known for works like The Gold and Guilt.

Coogan's Approach to 'Legends'

Coogan describes Dom as an amalgam of real people, saying, "I have played real people before, and if they’re alive, I talk to them. If they’re dead, I don’t." Neil Forsyth praised Coogan as an "acting powerhouse" and a personal hero. Coogan, reflecting on his career, noted, "People who were basically kids when they watched me on TV are now at the peak of their creative careers and offering me work."

Why 'Legends' Stood Out

The script's quality and a strong older character role drew Coogan to Legends. "The part isn’t a million miles from me. I sort of crank up my northernness. I’ve known people like Don," he said. Coogan appreciated the evolving nature of the show, highlighting its ability to engage viewers throughout its episodes. He laughed, recalling watching the series, "I’d crop up and I’d go, 'Oh, I forgot. I’m in this.'"

Action and Behind-the-Scenes

Coogan handled his own action scenes, preferring to run himself rather than use a stand-in. "I watched him and said, 'Okay. I’ll do my own running, thanks,'" he recounted. Coogan maintains his fitness, although he admitted to needing a rest during filming. Previously, he had performed stunts like a diving roll in a recent Partridge series.

Future Projects and Reflections

Looking ahead, Coogan is working on a sitcom, Bill’s Included, with Rob Brydon, though he will not star in it. He is also writing a historical drama with Jeff Pope. On turning 60, Coogan remarked on becoming comfortable with oneself, despite public opinions. He also mentioned ongoing ideas for his character Alan Partridge, hinting at possible future developments.
