Prime Video's Elle has dedicated an episode to the late James Van Der Beek, who passed away in February at the age of 48 after battling colorectal cancer. The tribute comes as the Legally Blonde prequel series premieres in July.
James Van Der Beek's Role in 'Elle'
In Elle, Van Der Beek portrayed Dean Wilson, a school district superintendent running for mayor. His character becomes entangled in a plot when Elle Woods, played by Lexi Minetree, exposes his extortion scheme with Principal Anderson, leading to his arrest. This pivotal role was one of Van Der Beek's final performances.
The series honored the actor with a title card reading, “In loving memory of James Van Der Beek,” following his first appearance in the third episode titled “You’re Not the Girl I Thought You Were.”
Remembering a Talented Actor
Following his death, Kimberly Van Der Beek, his wife, shared the news, prompting an outpouring of tributes. Reese Witherspoon, an executive producer on Elle, expressed her condolences on Instagram, praising Van Der Beek's talent and kindness.
“Devastated to hear about James Van Der Beek,” Witherspoon wrote. “What an extraordinary, talented man who also showed great kindness and grace in every action.”
Final Film Roles and Colleagues' Praise
In addition to Elle, Van Der Beek's final film roles included The Gates, released in March, and Sidelined 2: Intercepted, which came out in November 2025. Noah Beck, who played his onscreen son in Sidelined 2 and Sidelined: The QB (2024), shared his admiration for Van Der Beek, describing him as a masterful actor.
“With James, he has such a presence to him, and you can’t not be present in a scene with him,” Beck remarked, highlighting the impact Van Der Beek had on his own acting journey.
Van Der Beek's legacy continues to touch colleagues and fans alike, as Elle and his other works serve as a testament to his enduring talent.
