Jodie Foster Critiques Brad Pitt's 'F1' As AI-Like

Jodie Foster criticized Brad Pitt's film 'F1' during a panel at the Aspen Festival of Ideas, suggesting it felt as though it was made by AI, despite the film's commercial success.

AI in Hollywood's Creative Process

At the 'Who Owns the Future of Hollywood' panel with former Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton, Foster remarked on the AI-like structure of 'F1'. "I don’t say this disparagingly," she noted, acknowledging the film's financial success, "but I look at a movie like ‘F1’ and I’m like, ‘F1’ was made by AI." The film grossed $634 million worldwide and won an Oscar for best sound.

The Impact of Technology on Film

Foster discussed the broader implications of AI on the film industry, comparing it to the transformative effects of CGI and digital tools. "AI is one more giant step forward into changing the industry," she said, suggesting that AI might eventually replace roles traditionally held by actors and writers. Lynton raised concerns about this shift, to which Foster responded, "We do replace people," highlighting the use of technology to replicate crowd scenes and reduce costs.

AI's Role in Filmmaking

Foster acknowledged AI's utility in areas like pre-visualization but emphasized the importance of filmmakers maintaining control over these tools. She cited a positive experience using AI in her recent film 'My Private Life' for a dream-like sequence, even if the AI-generated images were nonsensical. "If we are able to dominate AI consistently over time, we will be able to make things that reflect us, and we can make things better," she added.
