Forza Horizon fans have long requested a Japanese setting, and the developers listened. "Japan had been on our top five list," said design director Torben Ellert. The country’s rich car culture and diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to serene countryside, made it a perfect choice for the series.
Exploring Japan's Diversity
Tokyo, the central hub in Forza Horizon 6, is five times larger than any previous city in the series. It features intricate vertical structures, partly inspired by Forza Horizon 5's Hot Wheels DLC. Players will race through various terrains, including highways, forests, and mountains, enhanced by a dynamic seasonal weather system.
Early development involved a team trip to Japan, capturing authentic local experiences. "There’s nothing quite like going there," noted lead game designer David Orton. The team visited iconic locations like Daikoku in Yokohama, a haven for car enthusiasts, and even recorded real Japanese skies for authenticity.
Cultural Sensitivity and Innovation
Cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita ensured that Forza Horizon 6 reflected Japan’s cultural nuances accurately. "Japan is an island, roughly the size of California, with unique characteristics across its 47 prefectures," she explained. The game discourages players from destroying culturally significant items, like kites at festivals, instead rewarding photography.
The game also introduces the concept of akiya, or vacant homes, integrating community restoration into gameplay. "It’s going to be a race route, of course," Ellert mentioned, adding a playful twist to the cultural reference.

While many cultural details might go unnoticed by players racing through the game, the developers believe the authenticity resonates subliminally. Some elements, like regional mascots, add humor, allowing players to interact with them creatively.
