Erin Brockovich Challenges Data Center Transparency

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich is advocating for increased transparency in data center construction, focusing on the impact these centers have on local communities. Brockovich, known for her landmark legal battle against Pacific Gas & Electric, launched a website featuring a map of data centers across the U.S.

Community Concerns

The website, described as a 'work in progress', compiles data centers reported by nearby residents. In a recent Substack post, Brockovich highlighted that after soliciting reports on data center issues in April, she received nearly 4,000 submissions in the first month.

The primary concern, Brockovich noted, is a lack of transparency. "The single most common concern — more than noise, more than water usage, more than rising utility bills — is the one word that keeps appearing in submission after submission: transparency," she wrote.

Not Against Development

Brockovich clarified that her stance is not against data centers or AI technology. Instead, she criticizes the established pattern of announcing projects only after securing permits, developers ignoring community inquiries, and local officials signing NDAs before public awareness.

"I'm not making a blanket argument against data centers," she stated. "It's about the process documented by our map: projects being kept from public scrutiny until it’s too late."

Growing Movement

Brockovich's efforts emphasize the need for open communication and transparency with communities potentially affected by data center operations. The rapid collection of nearly 4,000 reports demonstrates a significant public interest in these developments and the ongoing issues associated with them.

With the increasing demand for data processing and storage, communities are seeking a balance between technological advancement and local impact. Brockovich's initiative aims to empower these communities, ensuring their voices are heard in the planning and development process.
