The Walt Disney Company and the National Football League have joined forces to launch the 'Disney | Champion NFL Collection,' featuring Disney characters paired with all 32 NFL teams. The launch event took place on Thursday at New York’s Jacob Javits Center during Fanatics Fest.
Disney Meets NFL
At the event, Darth Vader, accompanied by Storm Troopers, shared the stage with NFL figures like Las Vegas Raiders owner Tom Brady, Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Marvel Chairman Kevin Feige was also present in the audience.
The collection was introduced through a unique “Disney Fan Draft,” where Vader was the first pick, symbolizing the collaboration between Disney and NFL brands.
Initial Launch and Future Plans
The apparel line initially launched with eight teams and will expand to all 32 in August. Current pairings include:
- Las Vegas Raiders and Darth Vader
- Buffalo Bills and Beast from Beauty and the Beast
- Dallas Cowboys and Toy Story’s Woody
- New England Patriots and Marvel’s Captain America
- New York Giants and Wreck-It Ralph
- New York Jets and Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Captain Hook
- Washington Commanders and Toy Story’s Hamm
Strategy and Design
Paul Gitter, executive VP global brand commercialization for Disney Consumer Products, emphasized the collection's aim to blend culture, fandom, and storytelling, especially as ESPN gears up for the 'Year of the Super Bowl.' The focus is on creating connections and brand affinity through sports and Disney collaborations.
Bret Healey, director of graphic design at Disney Consumer Products, explained the thoughtful process behind character-team pairings, considering team personality, colors, and fan culture.
Disney's Broader Consumer Strategy
Consumer products remain a crucial segment of Disney's business model, contributing $974 million in revenue and $479 million in operating income in the latest quarter. This collaboration with the NFL represents an effort to engage new audiences and expand Disney's reach.
With this latest initiative, Disney hopes to attract NFL fans to its brand, potentially enriching the fan experience for both Disney and NFL enthusiasts.
