Aleta Mitchell, renowned for her role as Dussie Mae in the Broadway production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and her appearances in films directed by Milos Forman, Wes Craven, Spike Lee, and Clint Eastwood, has died at 74. Her family announced her passing on April 14 in Branford, Connecticut.
Stage and Screen Career
Mitchell captivated audiences with her performance as Celestine Durand in Wes Craven's 1988 film The Serpent and the Rainbow, where her character famously appears as a corpse in a dream sequence, releasing a snake from her mouth to bite Bill Pullman's character. Her film credits also include roles in Forman’s Valmont (1989), Lee’s Malcolm X (1992), and Eastwood’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).
Early Life and Education
Born on February 12, 1952, in Chicago, Mitchell was raised in the Hyde Park area. She engaged in theater during her high school years, touring the Midwest, and later pursued formal education in acting. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1981, followed by a master's degree from the Yale School of Drama.
Broadway and Off-Broadway Achievements
Mitchell began her professional career in 1984 with her portrayal of Dussie Mae in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, originally staged at the Yale Repertory Theater. Her off-Broadway credits include performances in Distracted, Marvin’s Room, Approaching Zanzibar, and Ohio State Murders. Her film appearances also included No Mercy (1986) and O.K. Garage (1998).
Television Appearances and Personal Life
Mitchell's television credits include guest roles on The Cosby Show, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Equalizer, and The Jury. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Thomas, her son, Andrew, and her mother, Geraldine. A celebration of her life is planned for the summer. Her family described her as “a Shakespearean actor to the core,” quoting, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
