Valve has announced significant price increases for its Steam Deck, with the 512GB OLED model now priced at $789, up from $549, and the 1TB model at $949, up from $649. Both models are currently available for purchase on Steam, with an estimated delivery of three to five business days.
Price Increase Reasons
The company attributes the price hike to "rising memory and storage costs." Despite the increased cost, Valve states that the hardware itself remains unchanged. "These new prices reflect the current state of component costs and other global logistical challenges across the industry as a whole," Valve communicated, promising to update consumers if circumstances change.
Refurbished Models and Stock Issues
In addition to new models, Valve offers refurbished options, including the 512GB OLED model at $629 and the 1TB OLED model at $759. Previously, the Steam Deck faced intermittent out-of-stock issues in some regions, attributed to memory and storage shortages. These shortages have also delayed the launch of Valve's Steam Machine and Steam Frame, initially planned for early 2026, now expected later this year.
Industry-Wide Impact
The price increase is not isolated to Valve. In April, Lenovo raised the price of its Legion Go 2 by several hundred dollars. Similarly, Sony and Nintendo announced price increases for the PlayStation and Switch 2, respectively.
Recent Developments
On May 4th, Valve launched the Steam Controller, a product announced alongside the Steam Machine and Steam Frame late last year. These developments highlight ongoing challenges in the technology sector, primarily driven by component shortages affecting multiple companies.
