Stanley Tucci: From CNN to Nat Geo, Food Travels

Stanley Tucci's transition from CNN to Nat Geo for his food-focused television series reflects a journey marked by personal challenges and professional resilience.

From Hollywood to Food Icon

Tucci, known for his versatile acting career, has found significant success in food-related projects. Raised on Italian cuisine, he co-wrote and co-directed the 1996 film Big Night to escape being typecast as an Italian-American criminal, leading to a broader range of roles including a notable performance in 2009's Julie & Julia.

Health Struggles and a New Direction

In 2017, Tucci's life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with oral cancer. Treatment left him unable to eat normally, sparking an interest in food TV. This led to CNN's Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, a project that won three consecutive Emmys but was canceled in 2022 during Chris Licht's tenure at the network. Tucci expressed frustration over CNN's restrictions on continuing the show elsewhere.

Nat Geo's Embrace of a New Concept

Despite setbacks, Tucci remained a prominent food figure, with viral cocktail-making videos and a memoir Taste: My Life Through Food. Nat Geo stepped in to produce Tucci in Italy, which focuses on human interaction over food. Tucci explains, "It's not food porn... the food is a character, but the thing that makes the whole play is the three people, four people, or whatever it is, and that food."

Future Possibilities

Tucci's new series has already garnered Emmy nominations, and he is open to exploring new locations. However, he insists that any future projects must resonate personally, saying, "My interest in food is everywhere... but I’ll only do it if I feel connected to the place."
