Jordana Brewster, known for her role as Mia Toretto in 'The Fast and the Furious', criticized the franchise's increasing reliance on green screens and expressed desires for her character's agency to be restored in the upcoming final film.
Cannes Anniversary Screening
Brewster recently attended the 25th anniversary screening of the original 'Fast and Furious' movie at Cannes, alongside fellow original cast members Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, as well as Meadow Walker, daughter of the late Paul Walker. Brewster described the event as 'the largest red carpet of my life' and shared, 'I felt so comfortable... There was something so joyful about it.'
Character Development Concerns
Having portrayed Mia for 25 years across seven films, Brewster hopes the character's agency is restored in 'Fast Forever', the franchise's reportedly final installment. 'In the final one, I would like to harken back to the first one,' she stated, expressing her wish for Mia to drive her story rather than react to others. She praised Mia's active role in 'Fast Five', noting, 'She’s helping them figure out what’s next and jumping off buildings.'
Practical Effects vs. CGI
Brewster advocates for a return to practical effects. 'We lost nuance as the movies got bigger,' she said, lamenting the move toward VFX-heavy scenes. She recalled shooting practical action scenes with Paul Walker as some of her favorite moments, citing the authenticity and thrill of real driving over green screen simulations. 'There is something inorganic about being in front of a green screen,' Brewster remarked.
Balancing Action and Family
Brewster also wishes to explore Mia's life beyond the action-packed streets, particularly as a mother. She expressed interest in depicting Mia dealing with the challenges of parenting, especially teenage boys, saying, 'I’d love to see Mia lose her stuff on her kids.'
