Jesse Eisenberg, attending the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to receive the President’s Award, expressed his decision not to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning', a sequel to the 2010 film 'The Social Network'.
Rejecting Zuckerberg Role
During a festival conversation, Eisenberg was asked about his portrayal of Zuckerberg and its impact. He stated he no longer wishes to be associated with Zuckerberg, leading to 'Succession' actor Jeremy Strong taking on the role. The film also stars Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as a Wall Street Journal reporter.
Reflecting on the Original Casting
Eisenberg shared memories of being cast in the original film, mentioning an audition tape made with his sister before meeting the film team in California. He recalled memorizing dialogue for director David Fincher, who instead described the character's enigmatic nature.
“I thought it was an interesting character,” Eisenberg said of Zuckerberg, adding that the mogul was not widely known when the film was made, making the role initially compelling but less so as Zuckerberg's fame grew.
Thoughts on Social Media
Eisenberg discussed his discomfort with social media, saying, “I’m not on any of it. The whole thing scares me.” He criticized the disconnect between Zuckerberg’s creation of Facebook and his perceived lack of empathy, saying, “If this guy is the creator of this world, I don’t want to live in that world.”
Directorial Ventures
Turning to his directing, Eisenberg noted mixed reviews for 'When You Finish Saving the World' and gender biases in character reception. His next film, 'The Debut', stars Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti and releases December 3rd via A24, a studio he praises for valuing quality over profits.
Eisenberg also highlighted the financial challenges of American filmmaking compared to Europe, where state support allows for more creative freedom, encouraging aspiring filmmakers to consider European opportunities.
The Karlovy Vary Film Festival continues until July 11.
