Iordanes Spyridon Gogos: A Bold Australia Resort 2027

Iordanes Spyridon Gogos unveiled an audacious collection at UNSW Galleries for Australia Resort 2027, marked by unexpected interruptions and bold design choices.

Conceptual Beginnings

The event opened with a recorded monologue from designer Jordan Gogos, questioning the nature and purpose of buttons and buttonholes. This philosophical pondering set the stage for a runway filled with innovative fashion statements.

A towering Adonis, carrying a partner on his shoulders, emerged in coordinating green chain-stitched garments, illustrating the playful exploration of buttonholes. The dramatic entrance was briefly interrupted by a fire alarm, leading to an evacuation and re-seating of the audience. Despite the disruption, the show resumed with its intended flair.

Design Inspirations

The collection featured sculptural chain-stitched garments that initially appeared solo and then connected, reminiscent of Issey Miyake’s spring 1999 show. While buttonholes inspired the collection, they were just one aspect of the diverse offerings.

Origami-like designs mimicked the stamped text of Greek fortune cookies, paying homage to Gogos’s heritage. Avant-garde elements, such as outfits embroidered with thread spool clusters, showcased Gogos’s boundary-pushing creativity. Traditional ready-to-wear materials were also present, with some designs bordering on tapestry art.

Artistic Identity

Gogos frequently ponders his dual identity as an artist and designer. This theme will continue with his first solo art show at UNSW Galleries next week, featuring curated looks from the collection. The exhibition aligns with this year’s Costume Institute theme, “Costume Art.”

Gogos expressed his excitement about exploring new creative boundaries. “I’m at a point where I feel validated enough to really kind of extend myself even more,” he said. “I think I’m at a place where I feel more ready to fail, which excites me, because I’m like, how far can I push it to the point where failure exists?”

The collection stands as a testament to Gogos’s innovative spirit and willingness to challenge traditional fashion norms.
